MCCANDLESS HISTORY

Quick Nav:

A bit of history:

The Braemar-City of Lakes Figure Skating Club began hosting their Spring Invitation Competition in May 1972. It was originally co-chaired by Elmer "Mac" McCandless and his wife, Dorothy, along With Dr. and Mrs. Wilson Godfrey. They chaired the competition together for two years, then "Mac" McCandless began volunteering as the Competition's Chief Accountant. Unfortunately, Mac died on January 12, 1976 from carbon monoxide poisoning in his home. His wife Dorothy and their daughter Missy were also home at the time but survived the tragedy.

As a tribute to Mac's years of dedication to the figure skating club, the competition was renamed the Braemar-McCandless Competition in 1977. For the past several years, Dorothy McCandless has provided the "McCandless Memorial Trophy" to the winner of the Junior Ladies Freeskating event. This is the division in which their daughter Missy went to Nationals, and the last one that Mac watched her compete.

Enjoy the competition and as Mac would say:
"Always try your best!"
